Medical Issues & Chronic Pain
If you are suffering from a chronic health disease, medical issue or chronic pain, you are not alone, and there are ways to get better!
As Fitness Professionals, we have the skill set to screen our clients for exercise limitations and identify any potential risk factors, design individualized, systematic and progressive exercise programs for all populations, provide clients with general nutrition information so that they may make healthier food choices and act as a coach for clients so that they may overcome barriers to achieving their healthy living goals.
In general, research has shown that implementing an exercise routine and healthy lifestyle choices into your life will help improve your medical condition and/or chronic pain, provide you with more range of motion and energy, improve mood & sleep quality, increase your ability to complete daily living activities with ease and agility, and decrease stress and your risk for injury. Generally, when one is starting out with exercise, and has a chronic health condition or a physical or other functional limitation, it is important to get clearance from your doctor. Once this clearance is obtained, a Comprehensive Fitness Assessment, interviews and questionnaires will help determine a beginning wellness plan customized for you!
It is important NOT to jump into an exercise program without completing these steps, first.
Generally, individuals that fall into these special categories of need often need to start training at about 40-50% of their maximum capacity, in order to progress safely, with cardiovascular and strength training. Also, there are other specific precautions, such as a need to complete most exercises in a seated or standing position, avoiding certain movements and exercises or training using a Peripheral Heart Action system, rather than using a treadmill, for cardiovascular fitness. Let us provide you with the knowledge, tools and ability to safely and successfully implement a tailor made fitness program, especially designed for your Able Body!
An Additional Note on Chronic Pain: It is estimated that 80% of Americans will suffer from low back pain and that 20% will suffer from some type of chronic pain. Body pain is often a result of poor posture, incorrect movement around joints and/or repetitive movement patterns that over stress muscles. Our comprehensive assessments can help locate overactive and weakened muscles, and provide effective stretches and exercises that can help to balance and correct the neuromuscular dynamic.
Health coverage: Medical providers will often cover exercise expenses for patients who have a special medical need. Discuss an exercise prescription with your doctor. If you are able to get coverage, we are willing to work with your insurance provider to ensure minimum cost to you.
Overweight & Obesity
An estimated 70% of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, according to the Center for Disease Control. This percentage keeps growing for adults and children, every year, despite many public health efforts to stop it!
If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is greater than 25, you are considered overweight. Jumping into an exercise & diet program can increase your risk of injury and failure to stick to your plan. Able Body Fitness can provide you with comprehensive assessments that will provide you with the right level of care and support needed to get your wellness plan started!
Obesity results from energy imbalance. Simply put, too many calories in and too few calories burned equals weight gain. Age, body size, and genes also contribute to how many calories people burn each day. However, the most variable factor, and the most easy to manipulate, is the amount of activity or exercise people get each day.
In general, research has shown that implementing an exercise routine and healthy lifestyle choices, into your life, will help you to begin your weight loss journey and progressively get to your goal. When battling with weight loss, you need a lot of support and patience along the way. Able Body Fitness would like to give this gift to you. We want to help you stay on track and help you overcome any barriers that get in your way!
Exercise has shown to greatly assist with weight loss, improve your medical conditions and/or chronic pain, provide you with more range of motion and energy, improve mood & sleep quality, increase your ability to complete daily living activities with ease and agility and decrease stress and your risk for injury. To begin your journey, we will provide you with a Comprehensive Fitness Assessment, interviews and questionnaires that will help determine a beginning wellness and weight loss plan customized for you!
Physical activity prevents obesity in many ways. Regular exercise increases people’s total energy expenditure, which helps them stay in energy balance or lose weight. Physical activity decreases fat around the waist and total body fat. Weight lifting, push-ups, and other strengthening activities build muscle mass, increasing the calories burned throughout the day, even when it’s at rest, which makes it easier to control weight. The mood boost associated with increased exercise may motivate people to stick with their exercise and nutritional dietary changes, over time.
Please Note: It is important NOT to jump into an exercise program without completing the assessment steps, first. Generally, individuals that fall into special categories, such as weight loss, often need to start training at about 40-50% of their maximum capacity in order to progress safely with cardiovascular and strength training. Physical Limitations or Disability
According to the center for Disease Control, everybody, including people with disabilities, needs physical activity for good health. In the United States, about 1 in 5 people have a disability. A disability is any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities and interact with the world around them. Disability does not equal poor health, and most adults with disabilities are able to participate in regular physical activity and avoid being inactive.
Both Gail & Toli are experts in training individuals with disabilities and other medical conditions. Toli has 30 years of experience training individuals who have a specific physical limitation, disease or other medical condition (See Toli’s Bio for more info.). Given Gail’s experience as an Education Specialist, providing a health and wellness program for individuals with moderate to severe disabilities will be her specialty (See Gail’s Bio for more info). She understands how to implement specific Behavioral Plans that include Behavior Modification and Replacement Behaviors and Reinforcement or Reward Systems in order to support the fitness training sessions. She has taught integrated group fitness classes that include exercise modifications and accommodations that address strength, agility, speed and cardio training so that everyone, of all abilities, can participate and exercise the muscle groups being targeted. In addition, Able Body Fitness wants to work with the care giver(s), where appropriate, to ensure that physical fitness and nutrition plans can be carried out in the home setting. Too many people with disabilities do not have their Health and Wellness needs adequately met. Often times, an improvement in health can lead to an improvement in ability in many other areas of living, as well, and simply the experience itself can help to bring joy and a sense of belonging.
It is important to mention the limited mobility that comes from being in a wheel chair. If you or someone you love spends long hours in a wheelchair, you know how it can lead to uneasiness and be very uncomfortable. Able Body Fitness aims to design programs that will keep the body moving, as much as possible, throughout the day. Doing regular wheelchair exercises will help you or your loved one increase strength, flexibility, range of motion and strengthen the heart and lungs, while helping to control weight.
Health Coverage: Gail is currently working with San Diego Regional Center to reduce the cost of Fitness Training for Individuals with Disabilities. Please call or e-mail Gail to find out more information. In addition, check with your medical insurance provider and family physician to see if coverage for Fitness and Wellness training can be provided.
